Xavi on the Vitor Roque situation: ‘We didn’t want him to come to Barça’.

Xavi Roque

Xavi Hernandez was at a press conference on Wednesday 15 May 2024 ahead of the match against Almeria. It was an opportunity for him to discuss some of Barcelona’s most pressing issues, such as the case of Vitor Roque. And the least we can say is that the Spanish coach does not want him in his squad any time soon.

‘We didn’t want Vitor Roque to come in December, the plan was for him to stay there [at Athletico Paranaense],’ began Xavi Hernandez.‘The option was opened up with the injuries to Gavi and Balde. We thought it was the best move for his training. There’s a debate going on that, for me, makes no sense.’

On the player’s potential: ‘He’s a player who’s still developing his skills. There are footballers who are ahead of him, that’s how I understand him. Vitor has spent his whole life with young footballers.

As a reminder, Barcelona signed Roque in the summer and loaned him out to Paranaense until the start of the winter transfer window in December/January. The club’s plan was to keep him in Brazil until the start of the 2024/25 season, as Real Madrid decided to do with Endrick.

But a string of injuries forced the club’s directors to bring him in early. Roque arrived in a very competitive environment and has only started two games since. He joined Barça for 61 million euros.Barça must also pay at least €30 million over the duration of his contract.
