France woke up this Monday, January 9, 2023 in a soccer controversy involving the president of the federation Noël Le Graët and the French technician Zinedine Zidane. Since the first held hurtful remarks against the second who is a true legend in the world of soccer, comments that did not please the President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron.

Nöel Le Graët would have done better to keep his mouth shut last Sunday, by simply dodging his unprepared interview with RMC Sport. But by not doing so, he directly involved himself in a controversy because of his remarks about French technician Zinedine Zidane. And a day after the disrespectful remarks of the president of the French soccer federation towards the former Real Madrid coach, the consequent reactions, including Mbappé, the Minister of Sports Oudéa-Castéra appeared publicly to ask the veteran leader for explanations.

Indeed, after his statements, the Minister of Sports also gave Emmanuel Macron’s position: “The President of the Republic is really disappointed and offended when such comments are made about a legend of French and world sport,” Oudéa-Castéra acknowledged in a public appearance that lasted about half an hour. She also praised Kylian Mbappé for his quick reaction to Le Graët’s comments.

“His reaction was exemplary. He said everything in a line and a half. Bravo Kylian. He expressed exactly the words that we all felt. It is important that our best players can express themselves when other best players are injured,” he said. In addition, indirectly, Oudéa-Castéra leaves doubt about the permanence of Le Graët as president of the French soccer federation.

“As far as the representative function is concerned, the bankruptcy has been noted and the executive committee must take the measure. As for the next steps, the internal audit on Tuesday will help the committee to take the necessary decision. A request for resignation? I don’t put the equation in those terms. The representation function is deeply flawed right now. It’s very problematic when it leads a federation like this.”

At the same time, she acknowledged that his words “do not question the continuity of Deschamps, whom he considers a high-level coach,” before concluding by stating, without hesitation, that “the Federation and the players deserve better than such a leader.”
